OBJECTIVE: To explore the integrative medicinal therapy for non-gonococcal cervicitis (NGC) in order to elevate the therapeutic effect for patients treated in vain after long-term application of antibiotics. METHODS: Fifty patients with NGC were treated with Qingyuan decoction combined with antibiotics, and other 46 patients were treated with antibiotics alone for control. RESULTS: The cure rate and significant effective rate was 90.0% (45/50) and 65.2% (30/46) in the treated group and the control group, it was significantly different between the two groups (chi2 = 9.58, P < 0.01). The disappearance rate of symptom was 88.1% and 41.4% in the two group after treated for two weeks respectively, and it was also significantly different (chi2 = 12.42, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The therapeutic effect of NGC treated by sensitive antibiotics combined with Qingyuan decoction is better than that treated with western medicine only.

Cervugid ovules in cervico-vaginal infections and cervix uteri precancerous conditions treatment

This medicine was authorized by the National Drug Agency (ANM, Bucuresti) in 2001. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness and the tolerance to Cervugid-ovules, a preparation that combines the polyvalent local antiinflammatory action of chloramphenicol, metronidazole and nystatin with the effect of hydrocortisone acetate, an unspecific anti-inflammatory agent; they all are embedded in a Lipex-403, semisythetic fat. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The evaluation of 500 patiens ages between 15 and 85 years with genital infections, registered in the files of "Cl. II Obst. and Gynecology" of the Cuza-Voda Hospital from Iasi has been studied. We studied the subiective manifestations (local discomfort and pelvic pains, local burning and dryness,vulvovaginal itchting and dyspareunia) and objective manifestations (vaginal and cervical secretion, the cytotest performed and colored though the Papanicolaou method and reported in the Bethesda system). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Healing of the subjective symtoms in 98%, healing of the leukorrhea--as a main objective symptom--in 95%; The Bethesda system cytotest was one of the inflammatory type in the most of the cases and there wew found in 85 cases: 6 ASCUS, 41 LSIL, and 37 HSIL. The use of Cervugid had a healing response in most of the cases when used in acute and chronic cervico-vaginal inflammatory processes. Cervugid may be considered as an important agent in the treatment of the precancerous affections af the cervix uteri on the following reasons: zhe cure of the infections caused by chlamydia, involved in etiology of the cervix uteri neoplasiy, the cure of the HPV infection under episome form, classified in the Bethesda system within the ASCUS, AGUS or LSIL classes. When the cytotest was in the HSIL class, a conization in the LLETZ method was performed. CONCLUSIONS: Cervugid is conceived for those three main categories of pathogenic factors related to the etiology of cervicovaginitides: microbia germs, prothosoa and mycosis. In addition, it is active on chlamydia and mycoplasms, always sensitive to chloramphenicol therapy. That is why Cervugid with in local administration is indicated in the microbial, trichomonasis and mycotic vaginitides caused by one category of patogenic agents or by associated forms, in cervicitis, in the pelvic inflammatory processes (pelvic congestions, metritis, adnexitis, and inflammatory processes associated with beningn or malignant tumors of the genital apparatus). The results obtained proved that Cervugid is highly effective medicine.

Association between the cervico-vaginal inflammatory cytology and the intraepithelial cervical lesion in patients from a sexual and reproductive health clinic in Bogota, Colombia, 1999-2003

OBJECTIVES: Cervical cancer is the most common malignancy affecting Colombian women. Pap smear screening is used for its early detection. Early stages of cervical cancer can be expressed by the presence of inflammatory atypia in the Pap smear. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the role of inflammatory atypia in Pap smear as a marker of squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL), given that it is not clear how to deal with the presence of inflammatory cells in Pap smear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross sectional study was carried out to establish the operative characteristics of the cervical Pap smear in the colposcopy clinic of the Clinica Piloto Profamilia, Bogota, between January 1999 and December 2003. We compared patients with biopsies reporting SIL and those with a benign report in the pathologic study. We evaluated sensitivity the and the specificity of the Pap smear in different cutting points compared to the pathology report as gold standard. RESULTS: The prevalence found was 48,7 % for low grade - Squamous Intrepithelial Lesions (SIL) and 9,7 % for high grade - SIL. The best performance for the Pap smear test to detect SIL was when the atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) were considered as abnormal. Severe inflammatory atypia were associated to SIL in a similar way as to ASCUS. CONCLUSIONS: Sensitivity of the Pap smear as a screening test decreases when excluding Pap smears reporting ASCUS as a cutting point. In our environment, we recommend to report inflammatory atypia on the Pap smear test stratified by severity until the role of severe inflammatory atypia for the diagnosis of SIL is defined.

Enhanced lipid peroxidation and impaired enzymic antioxidant activities in the erythrocytes of patients with cervical carcinoma.

This study examined the relationship between oxidative stress and enzymic antioxidant status in the erythrocytes of thirty-two adult cervical cancer patients and an equal number of age-matched cervicitis patients and healthy subjects. Lipid peroxidation was significantly increased, while the activities of enzymic antioxidants (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase were decreased in the erythrocytes of cervical cancer patients as compared to healthy subjects and cervicitis patients. Thus, this study has demonstrated elevated lipid peroxidation and impaired enzymic antioxidant activities in the erythrocytes of cervical cancer patients.
